Each fact is a sentence from a source that at least two independent outlets report.
The Supreme Court today raised the Centre's eyebrows on the issue of over pricing of medicines and expressed its displeasure at the NPPA for its failure to bridge the gap between the drug MRP and the purchase price by the retailers.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta raised concerns while hearing two petitions related to medicine pricing.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, told the court that the government’s policy was not to control the entire pharmaceutical ecosystem.
She argued that medicine prices in India were among the lowest globally and said policymakers needed to balance affordability with the availability of medicines and the interests of the pharmaceutical industry.
The Centre has told the court that by capping the trade margin at the MRP of the anti-cancer drugs, around ₹2,500 crore per year will be saved in terms of benefits for patients.
